Recorder: Deed notice is a scam

Boone County residents should be on the lookout for a Deed Conveyance Notice arriving in the mail — and promptly throw it away.

On Thursday, Sept. 13, Boone County Recorder Mary Alice “Sam” Baldwin said that several Boone County residents have alerted her to the attempted scam.

The mailing looks like a bill and appears to require immediate attention.

It shows an amount due of $86 with a late fee of $35 if the recipient fails to respond before Friday, Sept. 28.

As an explanation for the “bill,” the letter says Proxy Data Retrieval recommends that all homeowners obtain a copy of their current grant deed to prove that the property was in fact transferred to them. The letters are personalized to include the recipient’s name and address.
